Burnt Out From Doing Everything for Everyone Else? There’s a Name for That.

May 17, 2026

There’s a specific type of burnout that comes, not from working too hard, but from performing too hard. Performing your identity. The version of yourself you keep showing up as, because it’s what people expect, what the brand requires, what feels safer than saying the real, weirder, more inconvenient thing you actually want.

That burnout is different and can’t be lifted with a rest day. It takes finally saying the thing out loud.

Episode 9: The Fellowship Crosses the Canyon of Windfire.

It’s a canyon that’s been on fire for as long as anyone remembers, fed by the wind, and feeding it back, and it has one rule: to cross it, you have to say a want you haven’t said out loud.

Why Performing Your Wants Is Its Own Kind of Burnout

Most conversations about burnout focus on what you’re doing too much of, but there is a quieter version of burnout that doesn’t always get named.

It’s the burnout of being so good at a role, a brand, an identity, that you’ve stopped being able to feel the difference between what you actually want and what you’ve convinced yourself you should want.

You’ve been performing your wants for so long that the performance and the person have blurred together.

Soul-aligned business coaches call it losing the thread. Neurodivergent entrepreneurs call it masking so hard you’ve forgotten your face. People, in midlife, call it waking up one day and not recognizing the life you worked so hard to build.

Different words.
Same exhaustion.

The Canyon of Windfire has a name for it, too. It calls it the performing layer, and it doesn’t let you through until you say what’s underneath it.

The Truth About Burnout from Performing

Ember the Dragon, Guardian of the House of the Ruby Flame, leads the Fellowship of the Rainbow through the Canyon of Windfire in the Sparkleverse, a story about burnout and unspoken wants.

The canyon sits at the fourth ring of the Wildwood. To cross it, you have to walk a narrow path of stone between columns of continuous fire, deep gold and crimson with veins of cooler blue running through them.

The flames lean toward you the way a curious dog leans toward a new visitor.

As long as you’re telling the truth about what you want, they stay back. The moment you try to cross while performing, they lean in until you stop and say the real thing. Not the thing you’ve been telling people, not what fits the brand, the want you’ve hidden underneath that.

The canyon is patient.
The wants are not.

Ember the Dragon, Guardian of the House of the Ruby Flame, led the Fellowship through because fire belongs to fire. She passed every vent without resistance. The canyon assumes Fire already knows what she wants.

The others had to stop.

What Five Powerful Beings Admitted They Actually Wanted

Skyborn the Griffin made it three vents before the flames came up. He stood there for a long time, then:

“I want to stop being the one who watches everything. I want, sometimes, not to see what other people are doing wrong. I want a vacation from being Air.”

The flames eased, and he walked through.

Marina the Mermaid closed her eyes at the second vent.

“I want to be allowed to feel things that aren’t useful to anyone. I want my emotions to be mine, not data to review or service to others. I want a feeling to just be a feeling.”

The flames eased, and she walked through.

Harmony the Unicorn made it almost all the way across. She looked directly into the fire.

“I want to not be needed for a while. I love showing up, but I’m tired of showing up.”

The flames eased. Ember silently bumped her shoulder against Harmony’s flank in the small physical gesture she reserves for people she loves.

Willow the Fairy was surrounded completely, with the far side in sight.

“I want to plant the seeds in my pouch in a place where people can see them. I want to be witnessed. I want it badly, and I’ve been pretending I don’t, because changing the brand is terrifying.”

The flames eased slowly. Then Ember, who had crossed first and hadn’t been asked, said her want anyway, on solid ground, with no flames to require it.

“I want to stop being the loudest thing in the room. I have a quiet side, and I don’t get to be that side around most people because they expect Ember the Dragon to walk into the room being Ember the Dragon. I want a room where I’m allowed to be soft.”

Zinnia Crownwild, the Woman Who Lives at the Far Edge

When the Fellowship reached the far side of the canyon, a woman stepped out from behind a stone outcrop. She had been watching them cross. Her tangled hair was the color of windfire tied with leather. She wore rust and ochre clothes and had freshly drawn charcoal spirals on her arms, with bare dusty feet.

She did not introduce herself the normal way. “I heard everything,” she said. “That’s the canyon’s design. I want to dance with you. For what each of you just said. Will you let me?”

“Who are you?”

“Zinnia Crownwild. I’m the canyon’s keeper. I speak almost entirely in desire. It’s the only language I trust. The canyon trusts it too. You honored it. Let me honor what you said.”

So she danced.

She danced Skyborn’s want by making herself small and setting down every imaginary gaze on her until she was sitting alone doing nothing at all.

She danced Marina’s want by gathering invisible water and letting it just be water.

She danced Harmony’s want by walking away from the group slowly, with the kindness of someone who is not abandoning anyone, just breathing.

She danced Willow’s want by planting a seed in the air where everyone could see it grow large and undeniable.

And for Ember, she made herself quiet and low and soft, and rested her head against an imaginary shoulder and let the fire be embers for an evening.

When she was done, she sat in the dust.

“The wants are honored. The canyon will remember.”

Before they slept, Zinnia pressed a small charcoal spiral into the back of their hands.

“For your wants. So your bodies remember what your mouths admitted. The mark fades in three days. By then, the skin will know what it’s doing.”

Species: Human (half-feral by choice).

Role: Keeper of the Canyon of Windfire, the fourth ring of the Wildwood

Element: Spirit with strong Air influence (windfire is both)

Guardian Alignment: House of the Ruby Flame (walks alongside Ember; Zinnia would find the alignment charming and a little limiting, and she would say so immediately)

Core Gift: Speaks fluently in desire. Reads what someone actually wants underneath what they’re saying they want. Can dance, draw, or speak the truth back to them in a form their body can receive. Lives entirely from instinct and unfiltered honesty.

Core Shadow: Has been alone so long she’s forgotten what ongoing relationships feel like up close. Tells herself she prefers it. Sometimes she does. The difference between sometimes and always is getting harder to see.

Appearance: Lean, strong, barefoot. Tangled windfire hair tied with a leather scrap. Rust and ochre wraparound clothes sun-faded to something between linen and silk. Fresh charcoal spirals on both arms, redrawn every morning. Feet permanently dust-marked from the canyon stone. Looks like she was made by the place and never quite separated from it.

Signature Item: A piece of charcoal in her hip pouch, used for the morning spirals and for marking the hands of travelers who cross through.

Teaches: The wants you don’t say out loud go underground. The body remembers what the mouth admits. Honoring desire is not optional. It’s the canyon’s only law.

The Want Underneath the Want Is the One That Matters

If you are burnt out and you can’t quite figure out why, it might be worth asking whether the burnout is from doing too much or from performing too much.

If taking days off to rest aren’t helping, if you keep showing up but it keeps feeling hollow, if you’ve built something that looks exactly like what you said you wanted and something still feels off…

The canyon would say: there’s a want underneath that. One you haven’t said out loud yet. One that might contradict the brand, role, or version of yourself you’ve been maintaining.

Say it.
To yourself first.
Then wherever feels right.

The fire doesn’t open up until you do.

Crystal Berg, the Dreaming Witch and creator of the Sparkleverse, in her role as Road Keeper and Time & Tech Witch

Hi, I’m Crystal. Your Guide Through The Sparkleverse™.

I’m not just one Guardian, I’m Ember and Willow, Fire and Earth, Bold and Grounded.

For years, I tried to choose: Should I be a strategic business coach or the intuitive witch? The ambitious entrepreneur or the restful healer? The visible leader or the quiet mystic?

Then I realized: I don’t have to choose, and neither do you!

I built The Sparkleverse™ because I was exhausted by the pressure to pick a lane, to be one thing, to fit into a single box. I wanted a world where magic and strategy dance together. Where you can build multi-faceted, complex, and contradictory lives & businesses, and that’s exactly what makes you powerful.

Now I guide others who refuse to pick just one path. If you’re multi-faceted, complex, and ready to honor ALL of who you are, you’re in the right place.
